Seattle (i/si'ætl/ see-AT-?l) is a coastal seaport city and the seat of King County, in the U.S. state of Washington. With an estimated 652,405 residents as of 2013, Seattle is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest region of North America and the fastest-growing major city in the United States.[5] The Seattle metropolitan area of around 3.6 million inhabitants is the 15th largest metropolitan area in the United States.[6] The city is situated on a narrow isthmus between Puget Sound (an inlet of the Pacific Ocean) and Lake Washington, about 100 miles (160 km) south of the Canada–United States border. A major gateway for trade with Asia, Seattle is the 8th largest port in the United States and 9th largest in North America in terms of container handling.[7]

The Seattle area had previously been inhabited by Native Americans for at least 4,000 years before the first permanent European settlers.[8] Arthur A. Denny and his group of travelers, subsequently known as the Denny Party, arrived on the schooner Exact at Alki Point on November 13, 1851.[9] The settlement was moved to its current site and named "Seattle" in 1852, after Chief Si'ahl of the local Duwamish and Suquamish tribes.

Logging was Seattle's first major industry, but by the late 19th century the city had become a commercial and shipbuilding center as a gateway to Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush. By 1910, Seattle was one of the 25 largest cities in the country.[10] However, the Great Depression severely damaged the city's economy. Growth returned during and after World War II, due partially to the local Boeing company, which established Seattle as a center for aircraft manufacturing. The city developed as a technology center in the 1980s, with companies like Amazon.com, Microsoft and T-Mobile US based in the area. The stream of new software, biotechnology, and Internet companies led to an economic revival, which increased the city's population by almost 50,000 between 1990 and 2000. Since then, Seattle has become a hub for green industry and a model for sustainable development.

Seattle has a noteworthy musical history. From 1918 to 1951, there were nearly two dozen jazz nightclubs along Jackson Street, from the current Chinatown/International District to the Central District. The jazz scene developed the early careers of Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, Ernestine Anderson and others. Seattle is also the birthplace of rock musician Jimi Hendrix and the alternative rock style grunge.[11]

Founding

Archaeological excavations suggest that Native Americans have inhabited the Seattle area for at least 4,000 years.[8] By the time the first European settlers arrived, the people (subsequently called the Duwamish tribe) occupied at least seventeen villages in the areas around Elliott Bay.[12][13][14]

The first European to visit the Seattle area was George Vancouver, in May 1792 during his 1791–95 expedition to chart the Pacific Northwest.[15]

In 1851, a large party led by Luther Collins made a location on land at the mouth of the Duwamish River; they formally claimed it on September 14, 1851.[16] Thirteen days later, members of the Collins Party on the way to their claim passed three scouts of the Denny Party.[17] Members of the Denny Party claimed land on Alki Point on September 28, 1851.[18] The rest of the Denny Party set sail from Portland, Oregon and landed on Alki point during a rainstorm on November 13, 1851.[18]

After a difficult winter, most of the Denny Party relocated across Elliott Bay and founded the village of "Dewamps" or "Duwamps" on the site of present day Pioneer Square.[18] Charles Terry and John Low remained at the original landing location and established a village they initially called "New York", but renamed "New York Alki" in April 1853, from a Chinook word meaning, roughly, "by and by" or "someday".[19] For the next few years, New York Alki and Duwamps competed for dominance, but in time Alki was abandoned and its residents moved across the bay to join the rest of the settlers.[20]

David Swinson ("Doc") Maynard, one of Duwamps's founders, was the primary advocate to rename the village "Seattle" after Chief Sealth ("Seattle") of the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes.[21][22][23] The name "Seattle" appears on official Washington Territory papers dated May 23, 1853, when the first plats for the village were filed. In 1855, nominal land settlements were established. On January 14, 1865, the Legislature of Territorial Washington incorporated the Town of Seattle with a board of trustees managing the city. The town of Seattle remained a mere precinct of King County until late 1869, when a new petition was filed and the city was re-incorporated with a Mayor-council government.[18][24] The corporate seal of the City of Seattle carries the date "1869".[25]

Timber town

Seattle has a history of boom-and-bust cycles, like many other cities near areas of extensive natural and mineral resources. Seattle has risen several times economically, then gone into precipitous decline, but it has typically used those periods to rebuild solid infrastructure.[26]

The first such boom, covering the early years of the city, rode on the lumber industry. (During this period the road now known as Yesler Way won the nickname "Skid Road", supposedly after the timber skidding down the hill to Henry Yesler's sawmill. The later dereliction of the area may be a possible origin for the term which later entered the wider American lexicon as Skid Row.)[27] Like much of the American West, Seattle saw numerous conflicts between labor and management, as well as ethnic tensions that culminated in the anti-Chinese riots of 1885–1886.[28] This violence originated with unemployed whites who were determined to drive the Chinese from Seattle (anti-Chinese riots also occurred in Tacoma). In 1900, Asians were 4.2% of the population.[29] Authorities declared martial law and federal troops arrived to put down the disorder. Nevertheless, the economic success in the Seattle area was so great that when the Great Seattle fire of 1889 destroyed the central business district, a far grander city-center rapidly emerged in its place.[30] Finance company Washington Mutual, for example, was founded in the immediate wake of the fire.[31] This boom was followed by the construction of a park system, designed by the Olmsted brothers' landscape architecture firm.[26] However, the Panic of 1893 hit Seattle hard.[32]

Gold Rush, World War I, and the Great Depression

The second and most dramatic boom and bust resulted from the Klondike Gold Rush, which ended the depression that had begun with the Panic of 1893; in a short time, Seattle became a major transportation center. On July 14, 1897, the S.S. Portland docked with its famed "ton of gold", and Seattle became the main transport and supply point for the miners in Alaska and the Yukon. Few of those working men found lasting wealth, however; it was Seattle's business of clothing the miners and feeding them salmon that panned out in the long run. Along with Seattle, other cities like Everett, Tacoma, Port Townsend, Bremerton, and Olympia, all in the Puget Sound region, became competitors for exchange, rather than mother lodes for extraction, of precious metals.[34] The boom lasted well into the early part of the 20th century and funded many new Seattle companies and products. In 1907, 19-year-old James E. Casey borrowed $100 from a friend and founded the American Messenger Company (later UPS). Other Seattle companies founded during this period include Nordstrom and Eddie Bauer.[31] The Gold Rush era culminated in the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition of 1909, which is largely responsible for the layout of today's University of Washington campus.[35]

A shipbuilding boom in the early part of the 20th century became massive during World War I, making Seattle somewhat of a company town; the subsequent retrenchment led to the Seattle General Strike of 1919, the first general strike in the country.[36] A 1912 city development plan by Virgil Bogue went largely unused. Seattle was mildly prosperous in the 1920s but was particularly hard hit in the Great Depression, experiencing some of the country's harshest labor strife in that era. Violence during the Maritime Strike of 1934 cost Seattle much of its maritime traffic, which was rerouted to the Port of Los Angeles.[37]

Seattle was also the home base of impresario Alexander Pantages who, starting in 1902, opened a number of theaters in the city exhibiting vaudeville acts and silent movies. His activities soon expanded, and the thrifty Greek went on and became one of America's greatest theater and movie tycoons. Between Pantages and his rival John Considine, Seattle was for a while the western United States' vaudeville mecca. B. Marcus Priteca, the Scottish-born and Seattle-based architect, built several theaters for Pantages, including some in Seattle. The theaters he built for Pantages in Seattle have been either demolished or converted to other uses, but many other theaters survive in other cities of the U.S., often retaining the Pantages name; Seattle's surviving Paramount Theatre, on which he collaborated, was not a Pantages theater.

Post-war years: aircraft and software

War work again brought local prosperity during World War II, this time centered on Boeing aircraft. The war dispersed the city's numerous Japanese-American businessmen due to the Japanese American internment. After the war, the local economy dipped. It rose again with Boeing's growing dominance in the commercial airliner market.[38] Seattle celebrated its restored prosperity and made a bid for world recognition with the Century 21 Exposition, the 1962 World's Fair.[39] Another major local economic downturn was in the late 1960s and early 1970s, at a time when Boeing was heavily affected by the oil crises, loss of Government contracts, and costs and delays associated with the Boeing 747. Many people left the area to look for work elsewhere, and two local real estate agents put up a billboard reading "Will the last person leaving Seattle – Turn out the lights."[40]

Seattle remained the corporate headquarters of Boeing until 2001, when the company separated its headquarters from its major production facilities; the headquarters were moved to Chicago.[41] The Seattle area is still home to Boeing's Renton narrow-body plant (where the 707, 720, 727, and 757 were assembled, and the 737 is assembled today) and Everett wide-body plant (assembly plant for the 747, 767, 777, and 787). The company's credit union for employees, BECU, remains based in the Seattle area, though it is now open to all residents of Washington.

As prosperity began to return in the 1980s, the city was stunned by the Wah Mee massacre in 1983, when 13 people were killed in an illegal gambling club in the International District, Seattle's Chinatown.[42] Beginning with Microsoft's 1979 move from Albuquerque, New Mexico to nearby Bellevue, Washington,[43] Seattle and its suburbs became home to a number of technology companies including Amazon.com, RealNetworks, Nintendo of America, McCaw Cellular (now part of AT&T Mobility), VoiceStream (now T-Mobile USA), and biomedical corporations such as HeartStream (later purchased by Philips), Heart Technologies (later purchased by Boston Scientific), Physio-Control (later purchased by Medtronic), ZymoGenetics, ICOS (later purchased by Eli Lilly and Company) and Immunex (later purchased by Amgen). This success brought an influx of new residents with a population increase within city limits of almost 50,000 between 1990 and 2000,[44] and saw Seattle's real estate become some of the most expensive in the country.[45] Many of the Seattle area's tech companies remain relatively strong, but the frenzied dot-com boom years ended in early 2001.[46][47]

Seattle in this period attracted widespread attention as home to these many companies, but also by hosting the 1990 Goodwill Games[48] and the APEC leaders conference in 1993, as well as through the worldwide popularity of grunge, a sound that had developed in Seattle's independent music scene.[49] Another bid for worldwide attention—hosting the World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference of 1999—garnered visibility, but not in the way its sponsors desired, as related protest activity and police reactions to those protests overshadowed the conference itself.[50] The city was further shaken by the Mardi Gras Riots in 2001, and then literally shaken the following day by the Nisqually Earthquake.[51]

Seattle's economy is driven by a mix of older industrial companies, and "new economy" Internet and technology companies, service, design and clean technology companies. The city's gross metropolitan product was $231 billion in 2010, making it the 12th largest metropolitan economy in the United States.[113][114] The Port of Seattle, which also operates Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, is a major gateway for trade with Asia and cruises to Alaska, and is the 8th largest port in the United States in terms of container capacity.[115] Though it was affected by the Great Recession, Seattle has retained a comparatively strong economy, and remains a hotbed for start-up businesses, especially in green building and clean technologies: it was ranked as America's No. 1 "smarter city" based on its government policies and green economy.[116] February 2010, the city government committed Seattle to becoming North America's first "climate neutral" city, with a goal of reaching zero net per capita greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.[117]

Still, very large companies dominate the business landscape. Four companies on the 2013 Fortune 500 list of the United States' largest companies, based on total revenue, are headquartered in Seattle: Internet retailer Amazon.com (#49), coffee chain Starbucks (#208), department store Nordstrom (#227), and freight forwarder Expeditors International of Washington (#428).[118] Other Fortune 500 companies popularly associated with Seattle are based in nearby Puget Sound cities. Warehouse club chain Costco (#22), the largest retail company in Washington, is based in Issaquah. Microsoft (#35) is located in Redmond. Weyerhaeuser, the forest products company (#363), is based in Federal Way. Finally, Bellevue is home to truck manufacturer Paccar (#168).[118] Other major companies in the area include Nintendo of America in Redmond, T-Mobile US in Bellevue, Expedia Inc. in Bellevue and Providence Health & Services — the state's largest health care system and fifth largest employer — in Renton. The city has a reputation for heavy coffee consumption;[119] coffee companies founded or based in Seattle include Starbucks,[120] Seattle's Best Coffee,[121][122] and Tully's.[123] There are also many successful independent artisanal espresso roasters and cafés.[119]

Prior to moving its headquarters to Chicago, aerospace manufacturer Boeing (#30) was the largest company based in Seattle. Its largest division is still headquartered in nearby Renton, and the company has large aircraft manufacturing plants in Everett and Renton, so it remains the largest private employer in the Seattle metropolitan area.[124] Former Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels announced a desire to spark a new economic boom driven by the biotechnology industry in 2006. Major redevelopment of the South Lake Union neighborhood is underway, in an effort to attract new and established biotech companies to the city, joining biotech companies Corixa (acquired by GlaxoSmithKline), Immunex (now part of Amgen), Trubion, and ZymoGenetics. Vulcan Inc., the holding company of billionaire Paul Allen, is behind most of the development projects in the region. While some see the new development as an economic boon, others have criticized Nickels and the Seattle City Council for pandering to Allen's interests at taxpayers' expense.[125] Also in 2006, Expansion Magazine ranked Seattle among the top 10 metropolitan areas in the nation for climates favorable to business expansion.[126] In 2005, Forbes ranked Seattle as the most expensive American city for buying a house based on the local income levels.[127] In 2013, however, the magazine ranked Seattle No. 9 on its list of the Best Places for Business and Careers.[128]

Alaska Airlines, operating a hub at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, maintains its headquarters in the city of SeaTac, next to the airport.[129]

How the Plumber Saved the Day

As the mother of two toddlers, I can tell you that life already has plenty of surprises in store on a daily basis . While they provide me with more joy that they could possibly imagine, they also offer a lot more challenges that I could have dreamed of as well . For the most part however, we have been able to get through this time with very few serious issues .

However, I do recall an incident that happened when I was setting up for a big party celebrating my eldest childs birthday, the smart and sassy one who shows a lot of love, while always getting into trouble. I had spent the entire week cooking and preparing everything for his birthday party to which wed invited a lot of family members and of course, all his little friends.

The party was to begin at 2:00 PM on a Saturday so I got up really early to get all the decorations up before the guests arrived. With the party scheduled to start at two o clock, I thought I had plenty of time to get everything ready when suddenly I heard a strange sound coming from the bathroom . I went down the hallway and found water on the floor and my little boy running out of the bathroom and down the hallway .

Apparently something had clogged the toilet and it just would not flush, and kept overflowing every time I tried. While mopping up the floor was no problem, I found that I could not unclog the toilet to save my life. It was clear that I needed a plumber.

I called one that I had used in the past but was worried he wouldnt arrive in time to fix the problem , especially since it was a Saturday, of all days to have this happen! I had called upon his services before, but I didnt know if he could be there in time to save the party, especially on a Saturday . However, he not only answered his phone as he always does, but he told me that he was on his way. I probably should not have been surprised since the plumber had a stellar reputation for service and also was available for emergency calls .

20 minutes after my call, the plumber arrived at my front door . Hed brought his tools and as he entered the doorway he assured me he would take care of everything. I was so relieved. He went right to the bathroom and told me to just carry on with setting up for the party . My boys seemed happy to see him too, even if they didnt quite understand what was going on. They sensed that I was in a much better mood.

Fixing the Toilet

The plumber got busy fixing the toilet and afterwards explained to me what the problem was. Apparently, my little troublemaker decided to find out how much toilet paper he could cram down the toilet before he tried flushing it. He practically used up the entire roll before he tried flushing and it was all wadded up down in the drain so the toilet backed up.

The plumber told me that if this should ever happen again I should immediately shut off the water at the valve to stop the water overflowing. He showed me where the valve was right at the base of the toilet and its very easy to turn it on and off. Ill have to remember that next time something like this happens, although I had a pretty long talk with my son so hopefully this will not occur again . The next step is to use the plunger to try to force the blockage through the drain so that it can be carried out into the sewage system . The water in the bowl is sufficient to apply enough force so that the blockage should be removed. . Once the toilet water has passed down the pipe then I could turn the water back on and try flushing it again . If the blockage has been completely removed it will flush normally.

But because my little boy had done such a good job the plumber had to get a snake from his truck and use that to dislodge the blockage. He was able to shove the snake down into the wad of toilet paper and push it through the pipe into the sewer system. Once he finished, he just turned the water back on and the toilet flushed normally.

It only took the plumber a few minutes to dislodge the blockage with the snake, so while he was there he inspected the toilet and discovered that the floating arm needed to be adjusted. I remember hearing what I thought was water running in the bathroom from time to time,.. But I was either too distracted or simply didnt know enough to understand that something was actually wrong with the toilet itself .

He showed me where the handle and the floating ball needed to be adjusted a little in order to keep the water from flowing into the tank when it wasnt necessary . I had noticed that our water bill had gone up in the past month. So I was very thankful to him that he spotted this problem . And let me know how to fix it in the future if it should happen .

The Plumber Saved the Birthday Party

I cannot say enough about my plumber as he unclogged the toilet, fixed another problem and inspected it all within 15 minutes . He was friendly and nice and the charges were very reasonable. I hesitate to think what might have happened if the plumber was not able to arrive in time. As it was, I had no difficulty preparing for the birthday party and none of my guests could even have guessed what had just happened a couple of hours before .

Before that morning I hadnt given much thought to how important it is to know a good reliable plumber you can call in an emergency, Im just so thankful I have one that really cares about his clients as well as the quality of his work. I really appreciate that he is willing to come out in an emergency on a day hed probably rather be spending with his family.

Plumbing How To Fix Videos

Linda was pacing the carpeted floor of the living room. She was pacing back and forth on the carpeted living room floor bouncing him gently in her arms .He was two and fussy, running a small fever. Linda hadnt slept at all in the last 24 hours. . Her older son, Steven, who was five, was busy playing a game and watching a cartoon on TV .Every few steps Linda would bend at the waist, ducking down a bit to look out of the window behind the couch, and out to the driveway . Lindas husband, Ben, had left for work hours earlier while it was still dark outside. .Linda had been left to take care of the two kids. She had taken them downstairs, set them both in the living room and turned on the TV, then went to the kitchen to get breakfast together. She hadnt noticed the wet floor until she was walking across it in her bare feet. The tiled kitchen floor was completely soaked with freezing cold water .She quickly found the source, the cabinet under the sink was wet, and when she pulled it open she could see a small crack in the pipe there. The pipe was slick with water and shining in the soft light squeezing in through the open cabinet. And poured some milk into their sippy cups, setting everything on the coffee table in front of the TV .She went to the fridge and made two glasses of chocolate milk in sippy cups and then gave her children their breakfast before hurrying to the phone and calling her husband at work.He was swamped, and annoyed when he took her call.He got even more surly when she told him what had happened.Call a plumber, he said in an exasperated tone. They hung up and now Linda knew it was her problem to take care of . She went and sat on the sofa in the living room . They were fighting over their game, with the younger one accusing his brother of cheating. Finally they let it go and focused on the cartoon being shown on TV . . She called one that looked good and they said they would send a plumber out immediately .So there she was, holding her youngest son, pacing back and forth and waiting for the plumber to arrive. Finally, nearly an hour later, she saw a large van pull up to the house .He drove a large white van, pulled it into the driveway, climbed out and headed for the front door . Linda opened the front door, welcoming him before he was fully out of the van . Hi, Im Tim, he said, shaking hands with the woman. He was in his late thirties, tall and thin, wearing a large tool belt. Linda welcomed him inside, setting Max on the floor next to Stevie, and took Joe to the kitchen .She turned and set her youngest next to his brother, and then led Tim to the kitchen . I mopped up what I could, but the pipes broken and still spouting water, she offered as she opened the cupboard under the sink . No problem, he said as he bent and opened the cabinet door.He peered underneath the sink and nodded his head . I need to cut the water off before I can start, but this shouldnt be a big problem to repair . Linda was relieved that it didnt seem like any big deal to the plumber . She felt like he knew what he was doing so relaxed a little bit . Joe found the valve easily and got the water turned off, then standing at the sink, turned the water on at the faucet so any remaining water would drain out .Then he bent once more and ducked under the sink. He cleared all the cleaning products out from under the sink so he could clearly see the problem, drying the pipe with a rag he pulled out of his toolbox . By now the boys were standing over him eyeing all of his tools .Lindas two sons stood in the doorway, watching the man work . Joe then grabbed a small tub and putty knife out of the toolbox and went to work .Tim opened the tub to reveal epoxy. He then wrapped the entire area of the crack with rubber .Next he wrapped the area with the crack in rubber, using two clamps to hold it tightly in place. Once the epoxy was dry, Joe used waterproof plumbing tape and wrapped it around the pipe, over the rubber, for additional protection .He stood from under the sink, went to turn on the water valve, and then tried the faucet in the sink. The water ran from the spigot and down into the drain. There was none, so he got up to see Linda trying to grab a wrench away from Stevie, who had obviously gotten into Joes toolbox . Youre good to go, he said . It was just a small leak, so there wasnt any reason to cut the pipe out, the patch should hold just fine . Oh youre a life saver, Linda said, going to get her purse. When she came back she was surprised to see Tim had taken the mop she had left against the wall and was mopping up the leaked water. You dont need to do that! she said.Tim waved her off. Its not a problem, he said. You have the kids to take care of. When Joe was finished and all the cleaning supplies had been replaced under the sink, Linda wrote out a check, and then pulled some cash out of her wallet for his tip .Tim told her it was unnecessary, but when she insisted he took it and thanked her. By now he had his toolbox packed up and was ready to go. Saying good-bye to the boys with high fives all around, he headed out to his van, but not before leaving his card behind at Lindas request. She was so grateful the problem was solved so quickly and so inexpensively. And now she knew exactly who to call next time she needs a plumber. Before doing anything else she added Joe to her list of contacts in her smartphone, under Plumber .
